5 Ways to Use Twitter for Web Site Promotion

by A Guest Author

Post Update: Here is a great tool to actually use Twitter to make some money – Carl

If you haven’t heard of it before, Twitter is a micro blogging tool that allows you to write short messages (up to 140 characters at a time) that can be exchanged between friends, and posted for all to see. You can access Twitter via Web, Desktop Applications and even SMS. Here are 5 ways to use Twitter to generate more traffic.

1.Network with people in your niche – add them as friends and ask them to do the same, so they’ll get your updates when you tweet them. Don’t friend random people, try and create a beneficial relationship
with all parties involved.

Tweet Tweet 2. Use a Twitter Search tool like Summize to see who is talking about your topic. Find out what the buzz is about your topic, who is talking about it, and then join in on the conversation and share your expertise and knowledge. Also use Summize to see what’s popular in the Twitter world, and try and create targeted content around that topic.

3. Let your followers and friends know about your new content – you can use a tool like Twitterfeed or manually update your twitter account when you post a new article, blog post or other piece of content. Your follower list is highly targeted – so they’ll want to know and read new content you’ve published. Not enough followers? Try creating Twitter exclusive content that will attract more followers and friends.

4. Solicit feedback on Twitter – ask friends and followers to give you feedback on new content, get their reactions, and continue the conversation on your blog or on Twitter.

5. Embed a Twitter box on your web page. Let visitors to your web site know that they can always be instantly updated – install a twitter box on your web site that updates with your latest tweets, and invite your website visitors to follow you on Twitter.

Twitter is a great way for getting in touch with other bloggers, promoting content, and increasing stickiness – use it well and you will increase your traffic, create buzz and establish a loyal following.

I haven’t had a ton of success with Twitter so far.

I did however come across a tip thathas helped me immensely. there are webpages that show you who has the most followers on Twitter. Use this to follow some of the more popular “twitter’s”. Then you make sure to message them, even if they never respond, you build credibility with their foloowers by looking like you are engaging them in conversation.

Great blog btw.

great advice. I am having some good results with twitter.

Fill in your profile with keywords you are interested in and are popular..even use names of popular entrepreneurs (like Timothy Ferris) and people searching for him arelikely to add you.

Once your Twitter account is in place, it’s time to start looking for other Twitter users to follow. If you know friends who use Twitter, start off by following them and then checking to see who else is following them – you might find more people to follow yourself in their list. The trick here is to get people to follow you – and the best way to do that is to start following them.

Twitter is becoming a very solid tool. I mean obviously it is already huge, but it is starting to get some big time media covaerage.

I know the TTC (Toronto Transit Commission) is now using Twitter to update passengers on any problems on the subway or bus lines.

Nice tips about twitter. I like your point about don’t randomly adding friends. Try to add people that you know and build the network amongst them. This definitely will make your marketing based stonger.

I have also tried to promote my website through twitter but failed. I don’t know the reason, twitter was supposed to be a great tool for promotion. Might be I have done some thing wrong or haven’t used it the way it should be.

Twitter is such a useful tool for website and product promotion. I think it definitely depends however on the type of message that is sent. It important to look at the overall message from an outsiders point of view.

Twitter is a tool not to be over looked, I use twitter by RSS feeding up from my blog. I then use GA to look at the extra traffic that I get back as referals from twitter. In all honestly I can say that I gain around 20 – 30 hits per day as referals from twiter. The more I post on my blog the more hits I get, it great! Using a free service like Twitterfeed just takes all the work out of it too, you would be mad to have a blog and not RSS to twitter! I havent looked into using the sumarise tool but I will do after reading this. Thanks.

24 Braking Systems February 20, 2010 at 11:22 pm

I don’t use it that much, but maybe I’ll start. The thing that annoys me most is that you STILL can’t post to Twitter via email. Why, WHY, WHY?! If you’re at work and the site is blocked and your cell doesn’t work so great in the building, you SHOULD be able to email the freaking thing.

The real key to effectively use Twitter from a business perspective is to make it less about ‘you’ and more about ‘them.’ While it’s nice to occasionally post news about your business, ideally the goal is to make Twitter posts interesting, valuable and relevant to those that are following.

Nice article!

There are also other neat ways to promote your website through Twitter: link Twitter to your Facebook or LinkedIn profile! Personally, I hate keeping all of my social networks up-to-date, but Twitter makes it a bit easier with the automatic status updates.

Plus, don’t forget: things like using hash tags in your tweets is also a pretty popular way to get noticed.

When people I respect started singing the praises of Twitter, I decided to give it a go. At first I just didn’t get it. However, after a short while I was shocked at the level of access to high profile individuals I was able to achieve.

I use twitter whenever I launch a brand new website to let Google find it. I think it helps me get indexed a lot faster. Once my websites are up and running I often start a profile on twitter and encourage my newsletter subscribers to follow me too…

yeap, am doing seo for a while, but still having difficulties in understanding tweeter :( I used a part of your advice but you provide some useful tips. the probem – IMO – is that at a certain point, flooded in marketing, nobody is going to follow for real other people, except for some interest. I think bogs remain the backbone of the internet :)

I had a client “google executive” on board about 2 weeks ago and i asked him if TWITTER is gonna be a threat to GOOGLE soon.
The reply was that if Twitter implements more advertizing tactics they’ll definitely will become a threat.
Great article i’m learning the many uses for TWITTER thank you for this article.

I definitely agree about what you said about finding followers. If you are tweeting and it is for business. You do not want to hurt your name by posting personal stuff on your business site. You should always tweet and find people you have something in common with, especially a niche.

Very interesting post. I think that it can sometimes be difficult to get new people to read your posts on Twitter, as it seems mostly oriented towards communicating with people you already know. The points you make might help with this, but I don’t really see why you would use a Twitter search tool like Summize. You can search for keywords etc. anyway on Twitter.

I am new to twitter but I have the basic understanding of the affairs. Honestly, as a twitter user I would refrain from using twitter for any other purpose than pure ‘social connectivity tool’. I’d also not aid people using it for anything else. So, with due respect to your suggestions, if there are more people like me out there, what are the chances of success of your strategy?

Do the Keyword Search of your business niche.
Select the ideal group of your business and start following.
Tweet everyday by valuable information and make others to follow you
Use direct message
If you have the followers of more than 6000, it will be really worth enough

42 seo birmingham April 26, 2010 at 2:54 pm

Twitter helps in generating traffic there is no doubt. Especially if you do a great link bait post on your website and then ask one of the social media expert who has a large amount followers can definitely get traffic to your website and you might even get juicy links.

43 Holly@Training Terriers April 29, 2010 at 5:12 am

I agree that using Twitter properly can be a great way to promote your business.
One of the downsides, however, is that if you are not careful you can spend hours checking out who to follow and other people’s tweets. You do need to apply some time management principles.
You do also need to be respectful of other people and not spammy. Engage in some general conversation with others that is not related to your business.
I have found it a good way to get contacts who live locally, so a great way to promote a local business too!

I also think that Twitter is good for developing content. Because you only have a limited number of characters per tweet, it really focuses your mind. You tend to make insightful, pithy points quite often. If you expand on these later, they can be the kernels of blog posts or even articles.
